UGANDA TO HOST THE 10TH NORTHERN CORRIDOR INTEGRATION PROJECTS SUMMIT IN KAMPALA

Uganda will host the 10th Northern Corridor Integration Projects Summit on 6th June 2015 at Speake Resort Munyonyo, preceded by the Technical and Ministerial meetings on 3rd and 5th June 2015 respectively.

Background 
The Northern Corridor is the transport corridor linking the landlocked countries of Uganda Rwanda, South Sudan and Kenya.  The Northern Corridor Integration Projects initiative is designed to generate sustainable political will necessary to fast track the implementation of the projects identified.

The 1st Summit was held in June 2013 and the three Heads of State of Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya agreed to meet every two months to review progress made. These meetings are hosted by Partner States on rotational basis. The decision is supported by articles 1 & 7 of EAC treaty (Variable Geometry) which allows progression in cooperation among groups within the community for wider integration.

Milestones so far

A number of milestones have been reached including but not limited to:
  • Removal of non-Tariff Barriers (NTBS) thereby reducing the cost of doing business
  • One Network Areas where roaming charges on voice calls have been harmonized and drastically reduced.
  • Freedom of movement achieved by use of National Identity cards
  • The issuance of East African Tourist Visa that has resulted in increased tourist traffic
  • Launch of the construction of Standard Gauge Railway 
Expectations of the Summit

During the summit a number of activities will take place and these include the following:
  • Launch of the NCIP website / Portal
  • Signing of the agreement of the total liberalization of labor and services
  • Signing of MOU on Cyber Security 
  • Participation of the private Sector: For the first time the Private Sector will be participating in the summit by hosting a Dinner for Heads of State. There will be interaction with the Heads of State of the member countries with private sector and the media during this dinner.
The interaction will highlight the available opportunities in the Northern Corridor Integration projects for the Private Sector to participate in their implementation.
