MEETING WITH MR. KAI HUGHS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE INTERNATIONAL COTTON ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ICAC), MARCH 14, 2019

H.E. Amb. Mull S. Katende met with Mr. Kai Hughs (Second-right) , Executive Director of the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) at the Embassy Boardroom on March 14, 2019

Amb. Katende discussed with Mr. Hughes mechanisms of strengthening technical cooperation with the ICAC to develop the Cotton sector and value-chain in Uganda.

Mr. Hughes also took the opportunity to brief Amb. Katende about new developments to the organization structure and Strategic Plan of ICAC. He outlined some of the benefits that the new ICAC Strategic Plan would have for member countries like Uganda.   

Mr. Hughes informed Amb. Katende that ICAC had developed a new App called the Soil and Pest App to be launched in April 2019 in India and would be rolled out to ICAC member countries in October 2019. The Soil and Pest App will help cotton farmers access weather information,soil moisture and quality, information about pests in the zip code area of the farmer and appropriate pest control methods.

Mr. Hughes also mentioned that the second major benefit for member countries in the new ICAC Strategic Plan would be online training for cotton farmers on modern farming methods. He elaborated that ICAC would collaborate with the German government to bring virtual reality training to cotton farmers in member countries. The training will include aspects like canopy management, spacing and other modern cotton farming practices.

Mr. Hughes asked Amb. Katende to nominate a representative from the Embassy to attend the ICAC Standing Committee Meetings that are held every two months. He mentioned that the next Standing Committee Meeting would be held on April 04, 2019 at the ICAC office in Washington D.C.
