Ambassador-designate to the United States of America

Mull Sebujja Katende is the Ambassador of the Republic of Uganda to U.S.A since September 2017, focusing on Commercial and Economic diplomacy and, in particular, attraction of investments into Uganda, sourcing of markets for Ugandan products and promotion of Uganda's tourism sector. He is a graduate of Makerere University in Uganda and Oxford University in U.K, having specialized in Development Economics.

Prior to his current assignment in U.S.A, he was the Ugandan Ambassador to Ethiopia and Djibouti from August 2008 to July 2017, resident in Addis Ababa, with concurrent accreditation as Permanent Representative to the African Union (A.U), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UN-ECA) and the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD). Before then, he was Ambassador to Sudan from August 2003 to April 2008 where he contributed to the normalization of relations between Sudan and Uganda and enhancement of economic and commercial cooperation.

Amb. Katende has been associated with African issues for much of the entire span of his diplomatic carrier of over 35 years, especially on the continent's priority areas of regional peace and security and regional economic cooperation and integration.                                                                      

He has played leadership roles in a number of African programs including being a four times chairperson of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union, one of the most active organs of the Union.

At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Kampala, Amb. Katende was head of the department responsible for the East African Community (EAC) and the Great Lakes Region. He was actively involved, as one of the senior officials, in negotiations for the re-activation of the EAC including being rapporteur of the final text of the Treaty Establishing the EAC in November 1999 in Arusha, Tanzania. He was also actively involved in peace and security efforts in the Great Lakes region,including the peace processes for Burundi, D.R. Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Sudan.

Amb. Katende has been part of teams that have prepared for many bilateral, regional, continental and international meetings and conferences at high level. He has attended almost all A.U and IGAD summits as well as UN General Assemblies since 1994.

Born on February 26th1957, Amb. Katende is happily married to Maliam Nalumansi Katende and they are blessed with two daughters and two sons.
