On 2nd June 2020 the Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs presented to Parliament a statement on preparation for return of Ugandans and legal Uganda residents stranded abroad due to airport and border closures following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wednesday, 3rd June 2020

He informed Parliament that Cabinet had approved, in PRINCIPLE, the proposal to allow these stranded Ugandans and Uganda residents to return in a PHASED and SAFE manner.

Accordingly, a multi-sectoral committee was tasked to put in place all the necessary facilities that will ensure a smooth exercise that provides for the personal safety of the returnees and that of the public in Uganda.

The Ministry of Health is therefore arranging for testing facilities on arrival, the availability of PPE for frontline workers who will be handling the returnees and for adequate and appropriate quarantine centers. Additionally, the arrival area at Entebbe Airport is being re-organized to ensure that it meets social distancing standards as prescribed by the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Health.

We now await detailed guidance on the repatriation schedule to enable us put in place the required flights. Please note that we have not received approved dates yet and we therefore cannot give you an exact date of when the first flights will depart the United States, South America or the Caribbean.

In the meantime, please be reminded that as per latest advisory from the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority, here is the notice.  Entebbe International Airport remains closed to regular commercial passenger traffic and you are advised not make new flight bookings on any commercial airline until the airport is formally reopened.
