H.E. Amb. Robie Kakonge attends the Regional Ministerial Forum on Migration (RMFM) for East and Horn of Africa
A Uganda Delegation led by H.E. Amb. Robie Kakonge is attending the Regional Ministerial Forum on Migration (RMFM) for East and Horn of Africa, currently underway in Washington, D.C. from 21-22 March 2023. The Forum has gathered representatives from 4 countries from East &Horn of Africa, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Somalia.
According to the IOM Concept Note, shared ahead of the meeting, "The diaspora communities in the EHOA countries are facilitating increased trade, investment and cultural linkages between the different countries that they are connected to, and they are important development actors. This "wealth" is benefitting not only the government but also private, technical and academic fields and contributing to greater social equity, peacebuilding efforts and sustainable development. The remittances they send home are also a critical source of income accounting for arround 65% of the income of the receiving family unit in Africa and associated with increased household investments in education, health, business generationa nd entrepreneurship-all of which have high social and economic return".
H.E. Amb. Kakonge is accompanied by Mr. Anthony Agama, Counselor in the Diaspora Department, MoFA, Mrs. Jolly Bakwega, Counselor for Diaspora Affairs at the Uganda Embassy, Washington, DC, President of the Uganda North American Association (UNAA) and a number of Uganda local community leaders.
