PHASE OUT OF MACHINE READABLE PASSPORTS

The Government of Uganda through the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control (DCIC) started the phase-out of Machine Readable (dark blue) Passports (MRPs) on the 7th December 2018 with the aim of converting all the MRPs to the East African.

Community Electronic Passports (E-Passports) by 31st January 2021.

Due to the effect of the Covid-19 Pandemic, however, the extension of the phase-out date of MRPs from 31st January 2021 was moved forward to 4th April 2022 after which date, all Ugandan Machine-readable passports will be invalidated regardless of indicated date of expiry.

All members of the Public are reminded that as a general rule, passports should have at least six months of validity when traveling internationally. Most countries will not permit a traveler to enter their country unless the traveler’s passport is set to expire at least six months after the final day of travel.

The six month window for expiry of all the Uganda Machine-Readable Passports ends in October 2021. Please make arrangements to have your passport renewed.
